Innovative Approach to Keep Musicians Playing
BOULDER, CO, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Boulder Concert Band, a nonprofit, nationally award-winning adult symphonic wind ensemble, today announced its partnership with Colorado State University’s (CSU) Occupational Therapy (OT) department to help band members who face challenges that can affect their musical performance.
OTD students in CSU’s OT department, led by assistant professor Kara Alcorn-Borodach, have developed a needs assessment survey, and it is currently being completed by Boulder Concert Band musicians. Once results are analyzed, recommendations to help support participation, well-being and enjoyment in the band will be presented.
“Adult musicians can face challenges, including endurance, strength, and other issues that make playing an instrument more difficult,” commented Marilyn Kroner, president, Boulder Concert Band. “So many of us identify very strongly as musicians, so when problems arise, it can be devastating. We are grateful to our CSU OT friends for their help.”
“Before pursuing a career in occupational therapy, I was a professional musician, so this project is close to my heart,” said Kara Alcorn-Borodach, OTD, OTR/L, and assistant professor at Colorado State University. “It is gratifying to help keep these musicians engaged and playing music.”
Ranked #1 by US News & World Report, CSU’s OT program trains future leaders to help people who face challenges with everyday life. Its graduate-level occupational therapy doctorate, as well as its Ph.D. in occupation and rehabilitation science, is taught by faculty engaged in nationally and internationally recognized research and community outreach. Its rigorous curriculum and fieldwork training make it one of the country’s best occupational therapy schools.
About the Boulder Concert Band
The first records of a performing band in the city of Boulder date back to 1870. The Boulder Concert Band was incorporated in 1978 by the late Hugh McMillen, former Director of Bands at the University of Colorado.
The mission of the Boulder Concert Band is to provide its community with outstanding, inclusive, live performances of traditional and modern symphonic wind ensemble repertoire. It brings together accomplished amateur and professional musicians to advance musical excellence, support and partner with local artists, and intentionally program works by living and historically underrepresented composers.
