New Survey Data Reveals the Moving Scam Warning Signs Consumers Need to Know

PR Newswire

CHICAGO, Aug. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — North American Van Lines, a professional moving company based in the United States that helps individuals with long-distance relocations, has launched a new survey. The 2026 Consumer Moving Scams Survey conducted among 500 recent movers across the United States and Canada reveals a troubling disconnect between consumer confidence and real-world experiences. While 81.4% of respondents said they felt confident they could identify a moving scam, nearly 45.2% encountered at least one problem during their most recent move, including hidden fees, unexpected price increases, damaged belongings, or difficulty contacting their moving company.

The survey highlights several warning signs consumers should watch for when evaluating moving companies. The most significant red flags include requests for large upfront deposits, unclear pricing or surprise fees, refusal to provide details in writing, and the absence of a verifiable business address or licensing information.

According to the findings, 35.6% of consumers cited unclear pricing and unexpected fees as the primary reason they would avoid a moving company. Despite these concerns, only 27.6% of respondents reported verifying a mover’s licensing, insurance coverage, or official records before hiring, exposing what researchers describe as a critical “credential gap.”

“Many consumers understand that moving scams exist, but awareness alone isn’t enough,” said a spokesperson for North American Van Lines. “The survey shows that people often rely on reviews and recommendations while overlooking the official credentials and written documentation that provide the strongest protection.”

To reduce risk and protect their belongings, consumers are encouraged to verify licensing and insurance through official sources, and work only with licensed and insured movers.

As moving activity remains high across North America, experts encourage consumers to thoroughly research moving providers, ask detailed questions, and insist on transparent pricing and written agreements before making a final decision.
