New day-of-service coverage check addresses a leading cause of graft claim denials in skilled nursing facilities
DOVER, DE, UNITED STATES, August 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Medipyxis, Inc., developer of the wound care practice management platform designed for mobile wound care teams, today announced the availability of a real-time Medicare Part A / Part B coverage check built directly into its clinical billing workflow.
The feature addresses a persistent problem in mobile wound care: a patient’s Medicare benefit status can change between the initial insurance verification at referral intake and the day a clinician visits the patient. When a Medicare beneficiary enters a covered Part A skilled nursing facility (SNF) stay, most wound care services become subject to SNF consolidated billing — and claims submitted to Medicare Part B for those services are denied.
“Insurance gets verified when the referral comes in, but nobody checks again on the day of service,” said Damon Ebanks, President and CEO of Medipyxis. “A patient who had verified Part B coverage last week can be in a Part A SNF stay today. The coverage didn’t expire — it shifted. And the clinician standing at the bedside has no way to know that until the denial arrives weeks later.”
According to CMS data, Medicare Part B spending on skin substitutes increased nearly 40-fold between 2019 and 2024, intensifying payer scrutiny on wound care billing. SNF consolidated billing rules, governed under 42 CFR 411.15, require that services furnished to a resident during a covered Part A stay be included in the facility’s bundled payment. Mobile wound care providers who bill Part B for services rendered during an active Part A stay face claim denials that are correctly adjudicated — making them unappealable revenue losses.
The Medipyxis Part A/B coverage check runs from the patient billing page with a single click at the time of service. The system queries real-time Medicare eligibility data through the Stedi clearinghouse, cross-references hospital and SNF admission records, and returns a determination — Part A stay, Part B, or Medicare Advantage — with a confidence level and the source evidence. If the patient’s status has changed since the previous check, the system surfaces an alert prompting the care team to confirm before proceeding.
Every check creates a timestamped, append-only audit record. The feature is designed as a clinical decision support tool: it advises the care team but never prevents a clinician from delivering care.
The Part A/B coverage check is available immediately to all Medipyxis customers at no additional cost.
